National March for Life – 5 October 2014

People march for life

SONY DSCDoctor’s for Life is proud to have been a part of the annual National March for Life in Durban on the 5th of October 2014. There were approximately 2300 people from all walks of life who attended, a 50{01b0879e117dd7326006b2e84bcaac7e8fa1509c5c67baf2c9eb498fe06caff4} increase on lasts year, and attendance is expected to increase considerably next year.

IMG_1099The National March for Life is an event where all pro life organizations and individuals gather together to show their support for the pro-life movement, and demonstrate their opposition to legal (and illegal) abortion. It is held on the first Sunday of October every year and is promising to grow exponentially. The National Alliance for Life (NAL) can be contacted regarding future events.

In 1997 when the South African public heard that that there were plans to legalize abortion, they insisted on a national referendum which was denied them. They were steamrollered and abortion was legalized by the South African Government.

SONY DSCIt was during the process of legalization of abortion that Doctors For Life International was brought into being. It had become clear that somebody would have to oppose legalization and be one of the voices for the unborn. In four of the most important embryology text books, the beginning of the life of a human being is clearly recognized as beginning at conception, and this is the position that Doctors For Life holds.

March for lifeAccording to Health Minister Mr Aaron Motsoaledi, statistics show that 94 000 schoolgirls fell pregnant in South Africa in 2011, of which 77 000 had abortions at public facilities. Discussions based on research and sound science will have to be brought to the table to challenge the status quo. It is clear that the law on abortion is not effectively dealing with the social challenges facing the youth, and the crisis that the Department of Health is grappling with.

USA – Marijuana may hurt the developing teen brain

In childhood our brain is larger, says Krista Lisdahl, director of the brain imaging and neuropsychology lab at University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. During the teenage years, our brain is getting rid of those connections that weren’t really used, and it prunes back. Researchers from Duke University analysed data gathered over many years from people living in New Zealand. They compared IQs in childhood through age 38 among marijuana users and nonusers. “We found that people who began using marijuana in their teenage years and continued to use marijuana for many years lost about eight IQ points from childhood to adulthood”, says study author Madeline Meier, now a professor at Arizona State University, “whereas those who never used marijuana never lost IQ points.” http://www.mprnews.org/story/npr/282631913?from=health ]]>

Costa Rica – Organ trafficking exposed

Costa Rican police have arrested a doctor for organ trafficking. Dr Francisco Jose Mora, a prominent nephrologist, is allegedly the key figure in a large-scale transnational racket, linked to Israel and Eastern Europe. According to the Mexican newspaper El Universal, two Israelis had paid a Costa Rican and a Nicaraguan US$6,000 to obtain two kidneys that were transplanted in a Costa Rican private clinic. The newspaper reported that a woman donor had died on her way back from Israel after a transplant. The arrests shines a light on the dark side of the Costa Rica’s booming medical tourism industry which it is known for world wide. Transplant tourism is an elegant disguise for what is really the illicit trafficking of organs. http://www.bioedge.org/index.php/bioethics/bioethics_article/10567]]>

Netherlands – Advocate General recommends banning pro-paedophilia group

The advocate general has recommended the Supreme Court ban the paedophile association Stichting Martijn, signalling the end of a legal battle which has been going on since 2011. The Martijn Foundation campaigns for the legalisation of sexual contact between adults and children and has been the subject of a convoluted legal battle for years. The advocate general, Vino Timmerman, said he recognised his position conflicts with freedom of expression and freedom of association rules. However, the protection of children should weigh more heavily, Timmerman said. This position is also key in European and international law. The advocate general’s recommendations are usually accepted by the Supreme Court. http://www.dutchnews.nl/news/archives/2014/03/advocate_general_recommends_ba.php]]>

Canada – Prostitution law consultations

The Calgary Police Chief wants to outlaw prostitution altogether. “You can create a series of laws where you come down hard on the user and look at the provider as a victim.” Officers need the law as a tool to give them access to victimised men and women who were coerced into sex work. In that way you have courses of action to move that person towards treatment or counselling or getting them out of that lifestyle. http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/prostitution-law-consultations-find-little-consensus-among-police-1.2595728  ]]>

UK – Cameron comes out against assisted dying

letter_carePrime Minister David Cameron has expressed his opposition to assisted suicide in advance of the issue being debated in Parliament, arguing that people who are terminally ill will feel unfairly pressurized into ending their lives. Mr Cameron has opposed assisted dying before but was speaking out because the private members’ bill drawn up by Lord Charles Falconer is due to be debated in the House of Lords. The bill would allow terminally ill patients to end their lives if two doctors confirm they are unlikely to live more than six months. But opponents to the move, including Lord Carlisle and Baroness Butler-Sloss say safeguards in the bill are inadequate. http://www.thetablet.co.uk/news/616/0/cameron-comes-out-against-assisted-dying-which-could-unfairly-pressurise-the-terminally-ill-]]>

USA – Abortion Insurance Law taking effect in Michigan

Michigan residents who buy health coverage in the private marketplace will not have access to abortion coverage, even if a pregnancy is the result of rape or incest. A new law prohibits insurance companies from covering abortion services unless customers purchase separate add-ons to their insurance plans ahead of time. The Abortion Insurance Opt-Out Act was passed in December by the Republican-controlled Legislature after a debate. Proponents say the law protects those who object to abortion from having any of their premiums used to cover the procedure for other customers in their group plans or within the health-care exchange. Opponents say the bill threatens women’s health by limiting access to a procedure that is legal and constitutionally protected. http://www.freep.com/article/20140312/NEWS06/303120050/Abortion-insurance-law-taking-effect-Michigan]]>
