Severe flooding since late December has had a serious impact on our DFL clinic in Sihane/Zavora, southern Mozambique. According to our clinic manager, Mr Mario Rocha, who has lived in the area since 2008:

"We have never experienced this amount of rain. In the past two weeks alone, we had over 300 mm.”

The flooding has damaged infrastructure across the country. Nearly 5,000 km of roads have been affected, and the EN1 national highway has been cut in multiple places, including near Xai-Xai. As a result, essential medication for our clinic is currently stuck on blocked trucks, and Inharrime Hospital, our referral centre, has run out of fuel, limiting emergency care.

Local health services are under further pressure. Mr Rocha reports that when transferring a 13-year-old girl with peritonitis, he was told that government nursing staff are on strike due to unpaid bonuses.

Nationally, over 500,000 people have been affected, more than 100 lives lost, and disease risks — especially cholera — are rising as clean water and health services are disrupted.

Please keep our clinic team, patients, and the people of Mozambique in your prayers.
